Biffle Leaving Rousch?
Negotiation talks between Greg Biffle and Rousch Racing have “broken off” according to reports, but will resume in about a month, according to Biffle. Okay, let me read that again. Negotiation talks? This is NASCAR we’re talking about now, and not football, basketball, or hockey. If that line doesn’t tell you that NASCAR has come a long way, I don’t know what does. It wasn’t too long ago that most drivers were happy just to have a ride in a ‘Cup car, but they’re more than a commodity in today’s NASCAR.
Drivers are inherently tied to their brand, whatever it might be. For Dale Earnhardt Jr., it’s the number 8, and of course Budweiser. Same for Jeff Gordon and the 24; ditto for Tony Stewart, and most of the top 10. It’s not of unheard of for drivers to make over a million dollars a year nowadays, with their salaries and sponsorship deals, and team owners are extremely cognizant of this because the sponsors subsidize a lot of the expenses of fielding a top-notch team.
Is Biffle a top-tier driver? I’d probably put him in the top-10 and it would behoove Jack Rousch to try and keep him on the payroll, but rumor is that DEI is talking with Biffle about driving the number 8 after Dale Jr. leaves. The silly season runs all year long now.
