Fuel Milage Racing - For the Birds
I hate races that come down to fuel mileage. If I was NASCAR president, and it looked like fuel mileage was going to affect the outcome of the race, and that the top-10 potential finishers were having fuel issues, I’d call a mandatory yellow for fuel. This is called “racing” and the boys need to top off, and then race to the finish. Sunday’s finish to the ‘600 was disappointing. Not because Casey Mears won a race he had no business racing, but because the timing of the fuel pit-stops shuffled the real contenders out of the running.
In fact, I thought Jimmie Johnson had it won after he pushed his “magic button” to move to the front of the field late in the race, but evidently, the magic potion didn’t last quite as long as planned. It was good to see Earnhardt Jr. finish in the top-10, given all the drama he’s going through right now. He’s going to give 110% the rest of the season and he doesn’t need his team laying down on him just because he’s leaving.
And Jeff Gordon got caught up in an early wreck that shouldn’t have happened, but you have inexperienced drivers trying to race for position when they should be just marking time. Isn’t that what a crew chief is for? Calm them down and keep telling them the race is 600 miles. Not 60. And kudos to Brian Vickers for bringing home Toyota in in 5th place! Sure there was some luck involved there, but he drove a great race.
