Loose in Turn Three: Can the Biff Hold it Together?

It’s Friday, folks … need I say more? As is the case every week, myself, Bruce, and Charlie are all here to bring you another scrumdidliumpcious (not sure if it’s even a word … and, definitely not sure on the spelling) redention of our ever-so-over-glorified “Loose in Turn Three.”
It’s been an interesting year in NASCAR … that’s something I don’t think anyone would disagree with … and, with guys like Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards leading the race win column, I find it interesting that there’s a few other guys who have ranked amongst the most dominant drivers of 2008, yet they still have no wins to show for it. This week, we’re going to examine Greg Biffle’s string of misfortunes and determine whether or not his team at Roush can conquer, overcome, and make the Chase for the Sprint Cup. And, of course, as is always the case, we’ve got plenty more to talk about as well, so make sure you go check out Bruce and Charlie’s pages to read the rest of the conversation once you’re done here.
So, sit back and buckle up tight. Three questions, three voices, and three different answer … we’re about to get Loose in Turn Three!
Q: Greg Biffle has had some great runs this season, but the results haven’t done him justice as he continues to have some of the worst luck in the garage area. After a lackluster 2007 season, can the no. 16 team keep it together long enough through the next 10 races to keep Greg in Chase contention?
TZ: Because of his horrible (by his standards) 2007 campaign, I think a lot of people have forgotten just how truly talented this cat is. I mean, you don’t win the Nationwide AND Craftsman Truck titles by being a fly-by-night success, and if he can ever get that Cup championship added to his resume’ he’d be the first driver to have ever won all three. There’s probably about five races this year that these guys could’ve - maybe even should’ve won, but they’ve had some of the worst luck imaginable (albeit, some of it self-induced), and yet, they remain 7th in points. They’re gonna get it figured out eventually, and when they do, not only will Greg make the Chase, but he could even contend to win the whole damn thing.
Bruce: That’s a tough one to predict. You can’t predict bad luck and dumb timing, but then with that team, I think you can! If they don’t have any more quality issues, I think they can give Biffle the shot he needs to get in the chase.
Charlie: It won’t be easy. And it would help if - and this is still an if, I think - the contract extention got done like this week. It has to be a distraction. Biffle hasn’t been all that happy with the equipement and preparation that he’s been getting this year, remember. I’m not sure that he asribes all of his troubles to “bad luck”. The fact that Matt Kenseth has edged into the top twelve, and Dave Ragan is close, is probably good news. Maybe Roush is getting things figured out. I say Greg hangs on to make the Chase.

- Fuel prices are going up and up. Everywhere, everyone is feeling the pinch in every aspect of our lives. Our beloved sport is starting to be looked at as a gas guzzling sport. Should NASCAR and Sunoco make a concerted effort to convert the sport over to a less fossil fuel centric sport? (Bruces NASCAR Bits & Pieces)
- After what we saw at Infineon, is there still a place for “road course ringers” in the Cup Series? (On Pit Row)

So much for the big “if” in Biffle’s life. The signing with Roush takes that pressure/distraction away. Greg should make the Chase - and contend for the title if he can get some bonus points by winning a couple races.

I agree. Being able to put all the contract talk behind them, this should be a huge plus for the 16 team. I’m anticipating him finishing somewhere around 5th in the points at the end of the year.

The team used to be pretty stout, indeed, before running into the brick wall known as 2007. They weren’t very impressive today, but I think that was just an overall result of Roush being a bit off on their setups. I have confidence that they’ll find Victory Lane once or twice this year and get the Biff into the Chase.
