Must Be Something In The Water

by Tim Zaegel on March 7th, 2008

After a very disappointing 2007 season that saw Greg Biffle capture only one victory and 5 top-five finishes, 2008 got off to at least a little bit of a better start by finishing 10th at Daytona and 15th in California. Both were very respectable finishes, but probably not very satisfying for the guy that tied with teammate Carl Edwards as the runner-up to Jimmie Johnson for the 2006 Cup Series title.  So, what does he do?

He goes fishing … and, in Mexico of all places. He joined his father and some friends down there to enjoy the southern sun and throw back a few beers … maybe too many beers, because all he caught were a few yellow fin, but apparently it worked. After a few days of chilling on the shoreline, the Biff then headed to Vegas where he and his wife Nicole took a liking to the craps table and won themselves a few extra bucks, and then it was off to work … and work he did.

Biffle went onto finish runner-up to Mark Martin in the Nationwide Series’ Sam’s Town 300, and then finished third the following day in the Sprint Cup Series to record only his second top-five finish in his last ten races at the Cup level. I don’t know what was in that water that those fish were soaking up down in Mexico, and most people would probably say that I don’t wanna know, but right now I’d be willing to bet that the Biff’s trying to pump it into his swimming pool. He seems to be gaining more and more momentum with each passing week, and he could re-solidify himself as a legitimate championship contender by the time we leave Atlanta.

Biffle is definitely starting to look like he’s coming back around. But if his run in the nationwide race was an indicater, than he needs to hope for a miracle to run good tomorrow.

It looks like his run at Atlanta was good enough to move him up to second in points. How’s that for an indicator?
