Saturday Morning Quick Fix

by Tim Zaegel on October 20th, 2007

Okay, so I messed up last week and forgot to get this out there for your enjoyment last Saturday morning.  That’s okay, though, ‘cause lucky for you I never make the same mistake twice … in a row.  So, now that the apologies are out of the way, let’s go ahead and recap what’s taken place throughout the course of the week, dating all the way back to last weekend.

- Chase leader and potential 2007 Cup Champion Jeff Gordon beat out fellow Chase contenders Clint Bowyer, Kyle Busch, Jeff Burton, and Carl Edwards to pick up his first Cup victory at Lowe’s Motor Speedway since 1998.

- After leading the most laps on the evening, Jeff Burton beat out fellow Cup-regulars Kyle Busch and Dale Earnhardt Jr. to win the Busch Series Dollar General 300 at Lowe’s on Friday night.

- Dale Jarrett announced that he will retire from racing after the first five points races of 2008. The void he leaves in the no. 44 UPS car owned by Michael Waltrip Racing will be filled by David Reutimann.  It hasn’t been announced who will takeover Reutimann’s 00 car next season, but early speculation is that it will be either Michael McDowell, Josh Wise, or a combination of the both of them.

- Billy Bellow Motorsports has entered future Cup teammates Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch into the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Race this Saturday at Martinsville.

 - Ricky Rudd has announced that this will be his final year racing part-time in NASCAR.

- Last weekend, DEI unveiled the new no. 8 car that will be sponsored by the US Army next season.

- NOS has announced that they will join in on the recent energy drink sponsorship craze in NASCAR.  They are scheduled to sponsor the no. 50 car driven by Stanton Barrett for four Sprint Cup Series events in 2008.

- Busch Series rookie Brad Coleman has announced that he will leave Joe Gibbs Racing at the conclusion of 2007. Next season he will race the no. 27 Busch Series car for Brewco Motorsports.

- Dario Franchitti is scheduled to make his Craftsman Truck debut this weekend at Martinsville.  Franchitti will drive the no. 40 Dodge for Chip Ganassi full-time in the Sprint Cup next season.

- On Wednesday, Greg Biffle his girlfriend of nine years, Nicole Launders.  Roush Racing teammate Matt Kenseth was included in the wedding party as a groomsman.

- DEI and Director of Competition Steve Hmiel have parted ways.  Hmiel’s duties have been spread throughout the rest of the shop for the remainder of the season.

- Jack Sprague, driver of the no. 60 Toyota, is fastest in final practice for the Craftsman Truck Series, turning a 19.96 second lap at 94.87 mph.

- After rain ended the first practice session early, Jeff Gordon wins his sixth Pole at Martinsville, coming across with a 19.938 second lap time at 94.974 mph.  The other top five qualifiers were Martin Truex Jr, Kevin Harvick, Jimmie Johnson, and Kasey Kahne.
