Do You NASCAR? - NASCAR News

Saturday Morning Quick Fix

by Tim Zaegel on October 27th, 2007

It’s that time again. As you sit there stretching in front of your computer, wiping the “dust” out of your eyes, and contemplating the best cure for your hangover, “Do You NASCAR” is here to fill your impatient racing needs with a recap of this past week’s events.  Before I do that, though, I’d like to inform you all that I’ve decided from here on out, I will do a recap twice a week – once on Wednesday morning and once on Saturday morning. This will be the primary outlet I use to deliver you the news. Why? Because after receiving some feedback, I’ve decided that the best focus of my normal everyday posts will be to offer more opinion-oriented stories, rather than just delivering the news. You can find the news at nascar.com and do not need me for that.  That being said, let’s rundown what’s taken place in the last seven days to shakeup the racing world yet again.

- Jimmie Johnson gets his second win in a row and seventh on the season as he brings home the checkered flag in a green-white-checkered finish at Martinsville.

- Mike Skinner won his fifth Craftsman Truck Series race of the season at Martinsville.

- Dario Franchitti and Colin Braun both announce they will make their NASCAR Busch Series debuts this weekend at Memphis.

- Bill Davis Racing puts a “For Sale” sign on their doors. Despite the many rumors floating around, it’s still uncertain whether they want to sell the entire corporation or if they’re just looking for additional partners.

- Randy Cox – former crew chief for Kenny Wallace & David Stremme in the Busch Series – has replaced Dough Richert as the Crew Chief for the no 83 Red Bull Toyota driven by Brian Vickers. This move goes into effect immediately.

- Bill Davis Racing has relieved Jeremy Mayfield of his driving duties behind the wheel of the no. 36 car. Mayfield is replaced by the duo of Mike Skinner and Johnny Benson.  Skinner is scheduled to qualify the car this weekend at Atlanta, which will be his first Cup appearance since Martinsville in the Fall of 2006.

- Jeremy Mayfield did not find himself out of work for long. Immediately following the announcement from Bill Davis Racing, Haas-CNC relieved Jeff Green of his ride in the 66 car, which will now be driven by Mayfield. CNC has also severed its ties with Johnny Sauter following the ’07 season, and he will be replaced by Scott Riggs next season.

- Of course, since Scott Riggs is headed to Haas-CNC next season, that means he must leave Chip Ganassi Racing. Because of this, Ganassi has decided to sit Riggs out of the final two races (Phoenix and Homestead) and will put Patrick Carpentier in the car for those races. Carpentier will also race the Busch Series race at

Homestead as well.

- Joe Gibbs Racing announced that future Cup teammates Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin will also split driving duties in the no 18 car in the Nationwide Series next season. They’re currently searching for a sponsor for that car.

- MRN has moved its corporate headquarters from Daytona, FL to North Carolina.

- The groundbreaking for a new track in Portland, OR began this week. Many feel this could potentially be the site of future Cup races, as NASCAR pushes onward with their desire to expand to the Pacific Northwest.

- Hendrick Motorsports won an appeal this week for the penalties levied against the no 5 Busch Series team. Following Kyle Busch’s win at Kansas, his car was found to be sitting too low. Robert Yates Racing also won an appeal for a similar situation that occurred with their no. 90 car driven by Stephen Leicht during the Busch Series’ trip to Montreal back in August.

- A week after leaving DEI, Steve Hmiel has been hired by Chip Ganassi Racing as the Manager of Competition for their Concord racing operation.

- Holiday Inn has renewed their agreement with Richard Childress Racing as the primary sponsor of their no. 29 Busch (soon to be Nationwide) Series car. Scott Wimmer has also extended his contract with RCR, as he and Jeff Burton will split time driving that car.

- Chrevrolet has extended their contracts with DEI for “2008 and beyond”.

- The International Speedway Corporation has sold their 676 acre track project on Staten Island to a Maryland real estate investment company. This officially ends any hopes the NY’ers had of getting NASCAR closer to the cities.

- Joey Logano announced that he will make his Nationwide Series debut for Joe Gibbs Racing on May 31st of next year at Dover International Speedway … just one week after he turns 18.

- Kasey Kahne was fastest in the first practice session for the Nextel Cup. Brandon Miller was fastest in the Busch Series practice. Kyle Busch was fastest in the first Craftsman Truck Series practice, while Mike Skinner led the way in the second session.
