The Chasers’ Outlook: Martinsville

1. Jeff Gordon – Average finishing position at Martinsville is 6.9.  He has five wins here and in his last 19 trips has collected (12) top five’s and (16) top ten’s.  He’s currently working on a stretch of five consecutive top five’s.  He was fastest in the first practice session and qualified on the pole position.

2. Jimmie Johnson – Average finishing position of 6.6 and has two Martinsville victories.  In his 11 trips here, his only finish outside of the top ten came in his first race back in the spring of ’02.  He’s collected (7) top five’s and (10) top ten’s since then. He’s currently sporting four consecutive top five finishes.  He was tenth fastest in the first practice session, but was then able to qualify fourth.

3. Clint Bowyer – He’s only made three Martinsville starts.  In those races, his only finish inside the top 20 came in the Spring of this year when he finished 11th, but his average finish is 18.7.  His first practice session run was 23rd on the speed charts and he qualified 20th.

4. Tony Stewart – He has the third best average finish at Martinsville amongst all active drivers at 12.2.  In 17 races he has two wins, six top five’s, and ten top ten’s. He’s also currently sporting a string of four consecutive finishes in the top ten. He was 12th quickest in the first practice session, but only 34th fastest in qualifying.

5. Carl Edwards – His average finish at Martinsville is a dismal 22.2 and has never finished inside the top ten.  He’s currently working on a string of three races inside the top 20, though.  He was 30th on the charts for the initial practice, but was 19th fastest in qualifying.

 

6. Kyle Busch – In five races here, he has an average finish of 15.0.  He’s got two top five’s and three top ten’s in that time.  He was only 16th quickest in the first practice, but was able to qualify sixth.  He finished fourth here in the Spring race.

 

7. Kurt Busch – He’s raced the Martinsville track on 14 occassions, bringing in an average finish of only 19.6.  He has only (2) top five’s and (4) top ten’s, but did pick up a win back in 2002.  He finished 12th in the Spring.  He was only 35th on the charts in practice, but managed to qualify 11th.

8. Kevin Harvick – In 12 trips to Martinsville, his average finish is 20.1 and his best finish so far has been 7th.  In those races he has only (4) top ten finishes, but did come in 7th on the charts in the practice and qualified third.  He finished 41st here in the Spring, but did come home 9th in the Fall race last year.

9. Denny Hamlin – In four starts he has an average finish of 12.5. In those races he has two top five finishes (the last two races here) and another 8th place finish in the Fall, 2005 race. He was only 29th fastest in qualifying, though, after landing 8th on the charts for the practice session.

10. Jeff Burton – His average finish in the past 19 Martinsville races is 12.6. In that time he has failed to record a victory, but does have (8) top five finishes and (11) top ten’s. He finished sixth in the Spring race. He was fourth fastest in practice, but dropped something along the way as he was only 32nd quickest in qualifying.

11. Martin Truex Jr – After three Martinsville races so far his best finish is 19th, which came in his first race here last year.  He was 9th quickest in the practice session and qualified on the outside pole.

12. Matt Kenseth – In 15 races, his average finishing position is 16.3 at Martinsville.  He’s never won here and has only three top ten finishes, with his only top five coming in a second place run back in 2002. He was 43rd fastest in practice and qualified 23rd.
