Wednesday Mid-Week Wrap-Up
10/26 – Greg Biffle wins his first Bud Pole Award of 2007 as he led the field in qualifying for the NASCAR Nextel Cup event at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
10/27 – Kyle Busch wins the NASCAR Craftsman Truck race in Atlanta.
10/27 – David Reutimann avoids a late-race pileup to win the Busch Series race at Memphis.
10/28 – Jimmie Johnson wins the Nextel Cup race for a second week in a row under green-white-checkered conditions. This time, as the field was coming out from under caution with a few laps to go, Denny Hamlin’s car sputters while leading the field, causing a massive pileup behind him, sending the race into “overtime”. On the first lap of the final restart, Dale Earnhardt Jr lost an entire tire, ending the race under caution as Carl Edwards (second place) was trying to take the lead from Johnson.
10/28 – NASCAR announces its plans to develop a “Car of Tomorrow” chassis for the Nationwide Series in 2009.
10/29 – NASCAR finds contaminated fuel in several of the cars that raced in the Cup event at Atlanta. Water was found mixed in the fuel cells of the cars of Denny Hamlin, Dave Blaney, Kurt Busch, and Ryan Newman.
10/29 – Rusty Wallace Racing signs Chase Austin to split time with David Stremme behind the wheel of their no. 64 car in the Nationwide Series next year, while Steve Wallace will continue to drive the 66. RWI also announced that they have signed an agreement with GM to run the Chevy Monte Carlo in all of the races on the Nationwide schedule in 2008.
10/29 – Joe Wyler and Michael Gaughan have formed Wyler-Gaughan Racing, which will field two full-time Craftsman Truck Series teams in 2008, as well as a partial Sprint Cup Series team. Brendan Gaughan will drive one of the trucks, with the driver of the other (as well as sponsors for both) yet to be named.
10/30 – It was learned that Bill Davis Racing filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection back on October 22. The hearing is scheduled with the Bankruptcy Court on 12/18.
10/30 – Darrell Waltrip Racing confirmed the sale of its Craftsman Truck Series team to The Racing Group (TRG). DW states that he wants to focus on the Nationwide Series in ’08.
10/30 – Phillip McGowan signs with the Bill Davis Racing organization to compete for their Craftsman Truck Series team.
10/30 – NASCAR began their COT testing at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Kyle Busch was allotted the opportunity to get in the Joe Gibbs Racing no 18 for the first time (he will race for Gibbs next season) and turned the fastest lap in the field in the first practice session, followed by Denny Hamlin and Scott Riggs. The second session was led by Kurt Busch, Kyle Busch, and Ragan Smith.
10/30 – Dale Earnhardt Jr also got behind the wheel for the team he will run for next season, Hendrick Motorsports. In his Hendrick testing debut, Junior was 8th quickest in the morning session, and 13th in the afternoon.
